What is Relay?

The relay is an electrically operated switch that works on the principles of electromagnetism used to send electrical signals from one circuit to another through a set of contacts.

They are used where multiple circuits are to be controlled by a single signal or a circuit is to be controlled by a low-power signal.

The relay system includes an electrical protection relay which is designed to trip a circuit breaker in case a fault is detected.

  • Interlock Relay

    The relay that is composed of two or more coils, each with its own armature and associated contacts, so arranged that movement of one armature or the energizing of its coils is dependent on the position of the other armature.

  • Neutral Relay

    The relay in which the movement of the armature does not depend upon the direction of the current in the circuit controlling the armature. Also known as a non-polarized relay.

  • Interlocking Relay

    The type of relay that is composed of two or more coils. Each coil has its own armature and contacts it is associated with. The arrangement is so that the movement of one armature or the energizing of one coil is dependent on the position of the other armature.

    Power system protective relaying are those types of relays whose main function is to detect the defective lines or any other faults in the power system that are abnormal or dangerous in nature and initiate an appropriate control circuit action.

  • Common Features

    • For each type of relay, a standard plugboard is used to mount the same.

    • Each type of relay comes with the facility of pre-wiring.

    • The wiring or plug board connectors can be terminated by both crimping or soldering.

    • To prevent wrongly plugging in the relays, they come with registration devices with specified coding combinations. To establish an electrical connection between the relay and the plugboard the code pins should be engaged correctly.

  • Relays in Railway Signalling
